The impact of different manure types in Chinese cabbage growth

Researchers show that differences in manure used, location, and hybrid affect the growth of Chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris L. var. pekinensis Lour (Olson)). This study, which was published in Horticultural Science, compared the effectiveness of various organic treatments on Chinese cabbage growth, yield and quality of the final product.

  • The different organic treatments included organic fertilization, two cropping system, and hybrids.
  • They performed a polyfactorial experiment, with a total of 18 treatments.
  • Either horse or cow manure was used as organic fertilizers.
  • Crops were planted in either a protected area or an open field.
  • Three Chinese cabbage hybrids were used, namely Golden Wa-Wa, Vitimo, and Hybrid Super.
  • Indicators of cabbage growth and quality that were used include plant height and cabbage head length, diameter, weight, and the number of leaves.

The results of this study showed that the best treatment in the organic culture of headed Chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris L. var. pekinensis Lour (Olson)) is the cultivation of Hybrid Super in protected land fertilized with horse manure.
