Clinical trial examines the effects of green cardamom supplementation on the lipid profiles of diabetic patients

A proposed study in the journal BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine claims to be the first randomized control trial (RCT) that will evaluate the effects of green cardamom supplementation in patients with Type 2 diabetes. Researchers from the Tehran University of Medical Sciences will determine how the spice influences glycemic status, lipid profile, and other biomarkers for patients with the condition.

  • Previous studies have suggested that cardamom contains antioxidant, hypolipidemic, and anti-inflammatory activities that work together to improve symptoms of diabetes. The effects of the spice on patients with the condition, however, have not yet been studied.
  • The RCT is designed to study whether cardamom supplementation can affect blood glucose, oxidative stress status, and lipids in Type 2 diabetes patients. In total, researchers will recruit a total of 80 overweight or obese patients with Type 2 diabetes.
  • The participants will be randomly assigned to take either a placebo or a three-gram cardamom supplement every day for 10 weeks.
  • During the RCT, researchers will be collecting pertinent data, including physical activity logs and 24-hour food recall questionnaires.
  • The following parameters will be measured during the RCT: physical properties like weight, height, and waist circumference; blood glucose and lipid profile; and, oxidative stress biomarkers, such as serum levels of total antioxidant capacity (TAC), malondialdehyde (MDA), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in red blood cells.
  • The tests will also include markers for insulin resistance (IR) and insulin sensitivity, as well as serum levels for irisin and Sirtuin1.

According to the researchers, the findings of the RCT will reveal whether green cardamom has the potential to be used to treat Type 2 diabetes.
